As someone who was already a fan of the graphics novels before the film came out I was very excited for this film. My friends and I claimed it was going to be the best movie ever. And how could anyone not love those trailers? It looked hilarious, and had some of the coolest action/fighting scenes I’ve ever seen on the big screen! Like Holy shit!
Well the film released on August 13th, 2010 in the USA and since then I have already seen it 5 times. Yes, 5. Big woop. Might go a sixth time. Yes, it’s that good. It’s one of those movies you just can’t watch once!
The story is simple. Scott Pilgrim(Michael Cera) is a 22 year old who falls in love with a woman named Romana Flowers(Elizabeth Winstead) and to continue to date her he must defeat her seven evil exes. AWESOME! Sure there is more to it, like Scott’s band, and a stalking chinese ex girlfriend, etc. But if you haven’t seen the movie or read the books, go experience it for yourselves! Yeah the movie is very different from the books in the latter half but the tone, the humor, and character stay so true to the books its almost impossible to not love.
The humor is non-stop. The first few times watching this I was laughing through out. Then there is the action. Each ex gets there very own unique action scene with each one being better than the last, in my opinion. Leading up to the best one against Gideon Graves. Romana’s most recent, and most evilest of exes. Oh yeah and he also formed the league of evil exes. Jason Schwartzman as Gideon is a complete blast.
It’s a shame this movie flopped at domestic box office. I honestly don’t know why? I guess it wasn’t mainstream enough. It got great reviews and some really amazing buzz from comic con. Damn shame because people are honestly missing out on one of the best fucking films of the year. Word of mouth couldn’t save the movie, and the talks of the movie flopping didn’t make mainstream want to see it anymore because they probably thought it flopped cause it sucked. WRONG!
This film is going to be huge when it releases on blu ray and dvd. When most people finally watch this when it releases on disc are going to regret they didn’t catch this gem in theaters when they had the chance! Edgar Wright , the director, deserves all the recognition he deserves. He’s bloody brilliant. I’d love to meet this guy one day if I ever make it big in the industry.
It’s certainly the most original, and exciting movie released in a very, very long time. It’s a shame we may never see a movie as cool as this for a long time because studios will be too skeptical to release such a niche film again.
Go check it out while you still can. It’s one hell of a ride.
